Sport in Argentina


Football is Argentina's national sport and Argentinians are in general Loco por el Fútbol!

The Argentina national football team ("La Albiceleste") have twice won the World Cup (in 1978 and 1986), and reached the quarter finals or better in 6 out of the last 9 world cup events - ranking 5th in South Africa 2010.

Argentina also have several world-famous local teams, including Buenos Aires rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate.


Rugby has been played in Argentina way back since the late 1800s but the sport has been gaining in popularity in recent years with Los Pumas impressive 3rd place result at the 2007 RWC in France.

In 2012 Argentina join New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in the 2012 Rugby Championship.


The Argentinian women's national field hockey team "Las Leonas" (the Lionesses) have had considerable success in recent years, winning 2 of the last 3 world cups, most recently held in Rosario, Argentina in 2010.


Polo remains a popular sport amoung wealthier Argentinians. If you visit Argentina between the months of August and December then be sure to attend one of the Argentine Polo Open Championship matches held in Buenos Aires' Campo Argentino de Polo.
