About Argentina

Argentina has a world of experiences to offer from within one country - thousands of kilometres of coastline, majestic mountains, fine food and drink, a rich culture and a large cosmopolitan capital city are just some of its charms.

Argentina's 37 million people inhabit South America's second largest country (and the world's eighth largest), but close to half of the population live within Buenos Aires province meaning that parts of the country are very sparse indeed - especially the southern region of Patagonia. By contrast the central city of Buenos Aires, often referred to as "Capital Federal" has almost the population of New Zealand while the greater metropolitan area has over 13 million people.

Argentinian Yerba Mate in NZ

Along with neighbouring Brazil and Paraguay, the Argentinian provinces of Misiones and Corrientes are the world's major producers of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), arguably Argentina's national drink. Mate (pronounced mah-tay) is best described as a variant of green tea and it is renowned for its healthy and refreshing properties. Drinking mate is a daily ritual for many of Argentina's population, especially in provinicial areas of the country.

Tango music and dance grew out of the suburbs of Buenos Aires and is now enjoyed throughout the world for its exotic sound and emotional style. Argentinian beef is regarded as some of the finest in the world and is produced in the country's fertile "Pampas". The dramatic Iguaz˙ Falls bording Brazil and Paraguay in the north is a natural wonder of 275 waterfalls spread along nearly three kilometres of river. These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what Argentina has to offer.
